Our Story

A family’s labor of love, Côte Bonneville was founded in 2001 to showcase the fruit of their acclaimed DuBrul Vineyard in Washington’s Yakima Valley.

Kathy and Hugh Shiels, both members of the medical field, purchased DuBrul in 1991. Originally an apple orchard, the Shiels got to work immediately removing the apple trees and, a year later, planting grapevines. Kathy recognized the uniqueness of this land and what the fruit could bring to world-class wines. Their daughter, Kerry Shiels, grew up in the vineyards and even made wine for a few school science projects (which first led to a school meeting, of course!).

Kerry earned an engineering degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, worked in Torino, Italy, in Fiat’s management development program, and then transferred to Case New Holland in Chicago before entering the world of wine. Kerry received her master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis and honed her craft in Napa, California, Argentina, and Australia. She’s worked in all winemaking areas at Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Folio Fine Wine Partners, Robert Mondavi Winery, Tahbilk, and Tapiz. Kerry officially took over as winemaker for Côte Bonneville in 2009.

Côte Bonneville is an estate that Hugh’s great grandfather Napoleon DuBrul built where the Carriage House was already in place. This impressive structure was later converted into a chapel in which Hugh and Kathy were married. Now beautifully restored, it links our family’s generations. Each label depicts a unique aspect of the Côte Bonneville estate.
